For a while, “The Meg 2” is a deep-sea-dive-gone-wrong thriller, waterlogged division, as Statham's Jonas leads a research expedition in a pair of submersibles down to the Mariana Trench, 25,000 feet below the surface.

In fact, not a single warm-bodied animal nor shark (including cold-bodied species), ever dives to the depths of the Mariana trench—the deepest point of the ocean—where the two MEG films are set. So, there is no possibility of megalodons hiding in the depths where we have simply missed them.

Jonas kills two Megalodons but Haiqi, a female Meg, manages to escape. The movie hints at Haiqi being pregnant, suggesting that more Megalodons will pose a threat in the future, along with the possibility of other aquatic creatures.
