Otogi speelt zich af in het middeleeuwse Japan, waarin de spelwereld is overladen met Japanse mythologie en sprookjes. In deze thirdperson action game speel jij de ondode krijger Raikoh die het opneemt tegen hordes demonen. Het is hack & slash van de bovenste plank waarbij je met behulp van verkregen ervaringspunten en geld nieuwe wapens en vaardigheden bemachtigt. Zo bouw je krachten op en word je steeds sterker en beter.
Wanneer je je vijanden na het hiernamaals hakt, beukt en tovert, blijven er magische orbs achter. Deze orbs dien je zoveel mogelijk te verzamelen, want hoe meer orbs, hoe meer geld en ervaring. Ook de manier waarop je je vijanden verslaat, speelt een rol. Simpel neerslaan is effectief maar doe je dit met fraaie combos dan levert je dit meer magie op. En magie is nodig om je eigen schade te beperken. Heb je tijdelijk geen magische krachten meer dan leg je als Raikoh dus eerder het loodje.
